On a paper invitation, print a group's QR code rather than a single code: it opens the invitation as that group sees it, and the guest replies by choosing their name from the group's list. Download it as an SVG for the printer, give it at least 2.5 cm per side and a white margin, and scan the proof before printing. The card looks beautiful, the QR code does the rest: an up-to-date programme, a reply in twenty seconds.
Invitation code or group code
| The invitation's QR code | A group's QR code | |
|---|---|---|
| What it opens | The invitation, in its shared version | The invitation as this group sees it |
| How the guest replies | They type their name | They choose their name from the group's guests, or type it |
| What they see of others | Nothing | The names of the group's guests, to pick their own; never their replies or contact details |
| What for | A poster, a single card | Invitations by circle: family, friends, dinner |
A group code has another advantage: the dinner card opens the dinner version, the reception card its own. The method of one version per circle is in our guide to the drinks reception and the dinner.
Where to find it
In "My invitations", the menu on your invitation's card opens the QR codes window: the invitation's code first, then each group's. Each code downloads as a high-resolution PNG, for everyday use, or as an SVG for printing, which the printer can enlarge without blur. The group's name can be written under the code, or not: your card may already say it.
Printing rules
- Size. At least 2.5 cm per side on a card: any smaller and older phones struggle to read it.
- Margin. Leave a white band all around the code, with no text or pattern.
- Contrast. A dark code on a light background, never placed over a photo.
- Paper. Matte paper avoids reflections that get in the way of scanning.
- Proof. Scan the printer's proof with two different phones before starting the print run.
The words around the code
The code does not say what it does: the sentence next to it does. "Scan to see the programme and reply before 15 May" is enough. Add the deadline and, for guests without a suitable phone, a number where they can reach you.
Once printed, do not regenerate
A group's link can be regenerated, for example if it has travelled too far. But the old link and its QR code then stop working, including on what is already printed. Regenerate before printing, never after.
On the day, a different QR code
The entry pass is a personal QR code, separate from the one on the invitation: from the Signature plan, each guest who said yes receives their own, and you scan it at the welcome desk. Everything is in our wedding QR code guide. To print yours, create your wedding invitation.
